You can change forward (motor) cog to sporocket (is this right word for what I mean "star"?) and vice versa. We didn't experiment with cog on rear wheel 'cause we didn't have rear sporocket & didn't need such replacement. But I'm 70% sure it's as easy as motor ones. Bikes (ls400 &650) are rather cheap, so they are maximum unificated. So both sporocket or cog can be placed on the axle.
Do U know how often should be replaced chain and each sporocket? My technician says that my bike has run at least 80K km in Japan & Russia (45K on odometer) since 1987. And cogs & belt have never been replaced.
So if we have data of how often should be changed cahin & sporockets we can count what is cheaper. But I think that belt would win.
